Port Harcourt Has an Illustration and Design Workshop You Need to Know About

Port Harcourt's creative community has always had the talent. What it has always deserved, and is now getting more of, are the spaces, platforms, and opportunities to develop that talent seriously.

On Saturday, 7th March 2026, Art In The Garden City, supported by the British Council, presents an Illustration and Design Workshop in collaboration with I AM VOCAL. It takes place at the British Council, 3 Odi Street, Old GRA, Port Harcourt. It is free. And if you are a creative in this city, it is not something you should miss.

We are sharing this at Selfie Week Nigeria because this is exactly the kind of creative ecosystem building that matters to us. Skill development, professional practice, community learning, these are not extras. They are the foundation of a thriving creative economy. And Port Harcourt deserves every bit of this investment.

What Is Art In The Garden City?

Art In The Garden City is a Port Harcourt-based creative platform running a Creative Economy Development Programme designed to support, train, and connect creatives in the city. This Illustration and Design Workshop is part of that programme, a practical, hands-on learning experience built for creatives who are serious about their craft and their careers.

The British Council's support signals something important: international institutions are investing in Port Harcourt's creative scene. That is recognition that the talent here is real and the potential is significant.

Who Is Donald Okudu?

This inaugural edition features Donald Okudu, a multidisciplinary creative whose work spans illustration, design, and visual storytelling. Okudu also designed a special series of fliers for this event in honour of Women's Month — a thoughtful creative choice that reflects the kind of intentional, values-led practice that makes his work stand out. For attendees, this is a direct opportunity to learn from, engage with, and be assessed by a working creative whose practice is active and relevant right now.

What Will You Learn?

The workshop explores design and illustration as tools for communication, identity, and social impact. This is not a beginner's drawing class. It is a serious exploration of how visual language works, how illustration and design carry meaning, build identity, and drive real-world impact.

The programme combines conceptual thinking, professional practice, and hands-on experimentation. You will leave not just with new skills but with a deeper understanding of why those skills matter and how to apply them in the real world.

The Residency Opportunity

This is the detail that makes this workshop genuinely significant. Serious candidates who demonstrate commitment and skill during the workshop will be considered for a residency opportunity at Donald Okudu's creative practice. A residency is not just learning, it is immersion. It is working inside an active creative practice, building real experience, and developing the kind of professional understanding that no classroom can fully provide.

Why Selfie Week Nigeria Is Sharing This

At Selfie Week Nigeria, we believe building a thriving creative community requires more than events. It requires education, mentorship, skill development, and real pathways for creatives to grow professionally. Our community deserves to know about every opportunity available to them. Because PHC's creative scene is part of the larger Nigerian creative story that we are committed to celebrating. This is what ecosystem building looks like in practice.
