So, What’s Happening With Nigerian Fashion Right Now?

Updated: Aug 24

Nigeria’s fashion economy is one of the most dynamic parts of its creative economy. Not only are designers making compelling clothes, they are building businesses on their own terms. Small labels are finding customers without waiting for traditional retail to validate them, using limited collections, made-to-order pieces, pop-ups and direct relationships with their audiences. Established brands, meanwhile, are finding new ways to stay visible and connected to the people who buy their work.

Fashion is moving through music, photography, social media, events, nightlife and everyday life. The lines between designer, entrepreneur, creative director and community builder are increasingly fluid. What looks like a clothing brand can often be something more personal: one person is building a point of view, finding an audience and figuring out how to sustain it.

That is part of what interests us about bringing fashion into Lost In The Garden: The Garden Edit.

Selfie Week Nigeria has always been interested in the space between culture and commerce: what happens when people with something to say are given a physical place to meet an audience. The Garden Edit gives fashion brands that opportunity without asking them to fit into a conventional fashion event. They can show up, sell, speak to customers, test their ideas and exist alongside plants, food, coffee, handmade objects and other independent businesses.

For this edition, Bibiéré, Jenutua, Stella Yedia and Diba join The Garden Edit, bringing four distinct approaches to womenswear and the business of building a fashion brand in Nigeria. They are part of a wider community of designers and entrepreneurs figuring out how to grow in a demanding but promising market.

This matters because visibility is not the same as access. A brand can have a strong Instagram presence and still need somewhere for customers to touch the clothes, ask questions, try something on and buy. Physical spaces create a different kind of relationship. They turn followers into customers and audiences into communities.

That is the role we see for Selfie Week Nigeria in this space: creating places where different kinds of businesses can meet people. Sometimes that means an emerging label making its first serious retail connection. Sometimes it means an established brand reaching a new audience. Sometimes it simply gives people a reason to discover something they might not have encountered otherwise.

On 29 August, fashion will be one part of a larger day at Lush Gardens. Come browse the collections, meet the designers, find something you love and stay awhile. Explore the garden, enjoy the atmosphere and make a day of it.
